Alta Mae Ellis Lewis, 88, of Amarillo, passed away on August 2, 2024. Celebration of Life services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday August 7, 2024. Alta will be available for viewing from 5:00 – 6:00 PM Tuesday August 6, 2024 at the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Cox-Rowley Funeral Home.
Alta was born on February 28, 1936 in Amarillo to Bill and Mayme Ellis. She graduated high school from Wellington High School in 1954 in Wellington, Kansas. Alta married her husband, Walter Lee Lewis in 1956 in Clovis, New Mexico. Alta went to work for the Oil Development Co. of Texas in 1955 later known as Santa Fe Energy Company. She worked on the twelfth floor of the Santa Fe building in Amarillo, as her dad had when the Santa Fe building was first opened in 1929. Alta later retired from Santa Fe Energy with over 35 years of service. She always said she was a “Santa Fe brat”.
Alta was preceded in death by her parents; her two sisters, Wanda Agin and Jeanne McGee; her nephew, Andy McGee; her husband of over fifty years, Lee Lewis.
Survivors include her beloved daughter, Carrie Henson of Lubbock; her beloved son, William “Brad” Lewis and his wife, Lisa of Amarillo; two grandsons, Bryan Lewis and wife Kelsey and Branden Lewis and his wife Andrea, Kerrie Thornton and husband Jacob, Emily Caballero and husband Eddie and Ronnie Ward and wife Tiffany; 10 great grandchildren, Blaire, Aspen, Kenzlee, Bentley, Autumn, Brecken, Brooklyn, Arizona, Sammy and Ezra; four nephews, John McGeeand Bill McGee and wife Sharon, Jim Agin and wife Jody and Michael McGee; one niece, Vickie Krupe.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Meals on Wheels of Amarillo https://amarillomealsonwheels.org/donate/ or to a charity of your choice.
