Althea Thomas, 87, of Amarillo, passed away Sunday, September 6, 2020. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Saturday at Cox-Rowley Funeral Home Chapel, 4180 Canyon Drive, with Pastor Kevin Oakley of Mescalero Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Althea was born January 31, 1933 in Brownwood, Texas to Fayette and Mamie Eckert. She attended school in Lometa and Goldthwaite. She married Fred Thomas on December 18, 1950. They enjoyed 69 years of marriage together. Althea worked for Gunn Bros. Store, Northwest Texas Hospital, Black Insurance Agency, and Amarillo Cash Register. Mostly, she dedicated her life to caring for her family. She loved to sing, and sang in Sweet Adeline’s and in the church choir. She and Fred were members of Mescalero Baptist Church. Althea was a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority. She played women’s basketball and enjoyed square dancing. Althea was a talented artist and loved to paint. She knitted and crocheted. She was a great story teller, and enjoyed sharing her stories with her kids’ friends. Family was everything to Althea. Her family remembers her as the glue that bound the family together. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Althea was preceded in death by her parents; and three sisters, Eldera Mallory, Dorothy Smith, and Mary Lou D’Spain. Survivors include her husband, Fred Thomas; a son, Alan Thomas and wife Tami of Lubbock; a daughter, Althea “Beth” Harris and husband Randy of Amarillo; four grandchildren, Sommer Wallace and husband Kaleb, Bryan David Hoyler and wife Kristen, Ashlyn Shae Thomas, and Tara Delaney Thomas; and seven great-grandchildren, Emily, Cieli, Madison, Aly, Coleden, Morgan, Chloe. The family suggests memorials may be made to the Downtown Women’s Center, at www.dwcenter.org.
