Apryl Joanne Mcmennamy

August 14, 1956 — May 18, 2023

Colorado

Apryl Joanne McMennamy, 66, of Leadville, Colorado died Thursday, May 18th, 2023.

Ms. McMennamy was born August 14th, 1956 in Amarillo, TX to L. Glenn McMennamy and Beverly Sue Raines.

Her youth was spent mostly on horseback, spending time with family at her father’s roping arena, and going on trail-rides in the Tascosa hill country. Being the oldest of three daughters, she took after her father when it came to “matters of the horse”. She had an undeniably fierce spirit, as attempts to throw her in the livestock tank proved fruitless, even when outnumbered four to one. For her size, she had unmatched strength and resilience, just as the lions that represent her zodiac sign have. Apryl was a true animal lover, and during her life cared for many animals including dogs, cats, fish, birds, turtles, horses, cows, chickens, and the like.

Her career as a Nurse began at Amarillo College, which spanned many fields throughout her time as one. She truly cared for her patients, and took great joy in their rehabilitation and care, and thus received Texas State Nurse of The Year honors for her efforts working and caring for head-injured patients. Apryl had a very caring heart and was often generous to a fault. She made many friends during her life that will never forget her unique soul. Apryl loved drama and dance, and she met a lifelong friend while participating in plays at Amarillo College. If not for her small stature, a ballerina’s life could have been hers for the taking, as her talent, love, and commitment were not lacking.

Apryl’s favorite activities included hosting movie nights at her house, being outdoors in the mountains, conversing with friends and family, reading books, collecting movie memorabilia, and was a connoisseur of coffee and tea. She had an intensely independent nature about her, and never lost this quality for a single second throughout her life. The mountains of Colorado and New Mexico were the places that called to her, and she was able to spend the remainder of her days there.

Survivors include Son Keith, Sister Robyn and her Husband James, adopted Sons Jonathan and Marcin, Niece Abby, Nephew Garrett, Grand-Nephew Dawson, Stepchildren Amber, Misty, and Jason, as well as best friend Nancy and her Husband Jim.
