Barney R. Williams

Barney R. Williams, 88, of Amarillo, passed away on Friday, October 14, 2022. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM on Tuesday, October 18, 2022 at Chaparral Hills Baptist Church, 4000 W. Cherry Ave. with Pastor Alan Burkhalter officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Barney was born June 23, 1934 in Childress, Texas to Robert and Verna Williams. The family moved to Amarillo from Lockney when Barney was very young. He graduated from Amarillo High School and went on to earn a Bachelor degree from West Texas State University. He married the love of his life Hollis Johnson on December 17, 1954. They enjoyed 53 years of marriage until her passing in 2008. Together, they raised two children, Marilyn and John.

Barney proudly served in the U.S. Army before going on to earn a Master’s degree in Education from WTSU. He went on to teach school for the next 33 years, retiring in 1991. Barney and Hollis were longtime members of Chaparral Hills Baptist Church, where Barney sang in the choir, helped run the sound system and served as deacon. Church activity and fellowship brought joy to Barney and Hollis.

Barney was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Hollis Williams; a brother, Robert Williams; and a sister, Louise Breidenbach.

Survivors include a daughter, Marilyn Gayer and husband Don of Edmond, OK; a son, John Williams and wife Jodi of Amarillo; two sisters, Imogene Welch of Amarillo, and Virginia Shell of London, KY; a brother, Henry Williams and wife Jerry of Amarillo; and two grandsons, Brandon Williams and wife Amanda of Van Alstyne, TX and Joshua Williams and wife Josie of Paris, TX.
