Bengy Gene Godfrey

Bengy Gene Godfrey, 90, of Amarillo passed away Monday, May 21, 2018. Graveside Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 24, 2018 at Fairview Cemetery in Memphis, Texas. The family will receive friends for visitation from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at Cox Funeral Home in Amarillo. Bengy was born on May 25, 1927 in Memphis, Texas to Eugene Hubert "Bud" and Enod Clyde Godfrey. Bengy graduated from Memphis High School in 1945 and went on to serve his country in the United States Navy. He married Nell Rita Cheek in Memphis, Texas. Bengy was a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service for 30 years before retiring. He was known as a mountain of a man, yet a simple man who enjoyed the outdoors. Bengy's hobbies included reading and reciting poetry from memory, riding motorcycles and four wheelers, fishing and enjoying life. He loved his family and his country. He was a beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. Bengy was known as "Daddy Ben" to his grandchildren. Special thanks to Kindred Hospice, Brookhaven Care Home, Abundantly Blessed Care Home and all the caregivers. Bengy is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Nell Rita; and one sister, Martha Smith. Survivors include one son, Joe Edd and wife Lynette of Amarillo; two daughters, Carol Wann and husband Roger of Dumas, Susan Godfrey Fenberg and husband Marty of Amarillo; six grandchildren, Kristy Ferrel and husband Mike, Lori Franklin and husband Marc, Jason Godfrey and wife Kirby, Holli Hodges and husband Jake, Ashley Higley and husband Ryan, and Austin Wann and wife Andrea; and 13 great grandchildren, Ethan and wife Jordan, Keenan, Bethany, Koby, Jayli, Layla, Trapper Bengy, Jett, Taylor, Blake, Nellie, Willow and one on the way in June.
