Billie Tanner, 85, of Amarillo died Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2015. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in South Georgia Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Martin officiating. Arrangements are by Cox Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive.
Billie was born Aug. 12, 1929, in Dallas to Morris and Lucille Smith. She got to Amarillo as fast as she could in 1941, with her parents. At the ripe age of 17, she and her best friend walked into Kline's Shoe Store on Polk Street, where she met the love of her life, Murle Tanner.
They married in 1947 and raised four children, Mike, Nancy, Karen and Doug. Billie was a homemaker, and she did so with compassion, grace and dignity befitting a woman of the 50's. She was the wife of a railroader and learned how to make bacon and eggs for her husband at any given time of the day or night. She was the epitome of beauty inside and out. She loved the Lord, her family and chocolate. Every year at vacation time, she went to the mountains because it was what we all wanted, even though she really didn't. She finally got to take her vacations after the kids were grown by taking several cruises with her partner in life, Murle. She was active in church and was a member of South Georgia Baptist Church in Amarillo. She was a woman of strength and dignity and was not afraid to grow old. She will be missed. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Survivors include two sons, Mike Tanner and wife Cathy of San Antonio and Doug Tanner and wife Shrese; two daughters, Karen Myers and Nancy Tanner, all of Amarillo; her sister, JoAnn Banks of Amarillo; her grandchildren, Jason Langford of Dallas, Amy Cassles of Austin, Sarah Myers, Vanessa Myers, Collin Tanner and Lauren Tanner, all of Amarillo, and Tammy Defoe and Corey Tanner, both of San Antonio; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff at Plum Creek Specialty Hospital for their love and care for Billie for the past 15 days.
The family suggests memorials be to Alzheimer's Association, 5410 S. Bell St., Suite 411, Amarillo, TX 79109.
