Bob was born April 21, 1933, in Wheeler County, Texas to Matt and Martha Campbell. He was raised in Shamrock, and enjoyed spending time in the boxing ring. He was known as “lethal-fisted” in Golden Glove Boxing. Fighting for the Shamrock Irish, he knocked out thirteen opponents in thirteen fights; hence, he was hard pressed to find opponents the following year. Bob proudly served in the U.S. Army from January 20, 1954-January 19, 1956. He was stationed at Fort Cronkite, in San Francisco, California. Following his service, Bob lived in Dumas, and worked at Diamond Shamrock from 1956-1969. He then lived in several different cities, working as a welder in various industries. He lived in Wichita Falls from 1985-1995, where he retired, and had lived in Amarillo since retirement.
Bob’s mother was a full blood Muscogee Creek Indian, and Bob was extremely proud of his Native American heritage. Being one of 10 children, family was very important to Bob. He always found pleasure attending family gatherings which he lovingly termed “biggies”. In his spare time, he enjoyed shooting pool, and competed in numerous pool tournaments. More recently, he found pleasure following high school football.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; a son Mike and daughter-in-law, Marsha Campbell; four brothers, Edd Campbell, Elzie Campbell, Jerry Campbell, and Bill Campbell; five sisters, Fay Campbell, Alice Wood, Jane Long, Mary Terry and Bessie Pugh; great grandson Damien Poole; and former wife and mother of his children, Rhonnie Campbell Mayer.
Survivors include his daughter, Melanie Poole and husband Kenny of Amarillo; his son, Brent Campbell and wife Kari of Austin; six grandchildren, Bryan Sparks and wife Carrah, Ashley Poole, Kaleb Poole and wife Yazmine, Dakota Poole and wife Sara, Eric Campbell, and Shaynie Gideon and husband Daniel; eleven great-grandchildren, Zane Sparks, and Zoey Sparks; Deklyn Poole, Anistyn Poole, Bostyn Poole, Noah Poole, Kohen Poole, and Samuel Poole; Braxxen Gideon, Karsyn Gideon, and Lincoln Gideon; and former wife and grandmother to his grandchildren, Patricia Campbell.
The family suggest memorials may be made to the Veterans Administration Medical Center of Amarillo.
