“Do you know Jesus?”

If you ever had an opportunity to interact with Bret Stewart, there is nearly a 100% chance that you were asked this question. With an affirmative answer, Bret’s face would brighten, and you would hear him say, “You are part of The Family!”

Being part of The Family meant the world to Bret. At eight months of age, weighing only ten pounds, Bret was placed into the loving arms of Allen and Nan Stewart. This precious baby won their hearts, and he was adopted into the Stewart family.

Mr. Stewart cared for his son with great tenderness and Mrs. Stewart gave him the gift of loving discipline. Bret held his dad in high admiration and loved his faithful mother. Together, the Stewarts raised a son whose heart was the proverbial “size of Texas.”

Bret lived in Kansas, Missouri, and Texas. During his high school years, Bret moved to Allison, Texas and graduated from Allison High School, in 1977. Following graduation, Bret worked at Gustin Welding and was part of the team who created the “Welcome to Dalhart” sign in historic downtown Dalhart, Texas.

A severe case of pancreatitis and three months of hospitalization changed Bret’s life forever. He never recovered full health. During that difficult time, Bret recognized that he needed to change the focus of his life. He opened his life to a new beginning, and in 2007, Bret’s life was changed by another adoption. This time, Bret was adopted into the family of Jesus. The change was profound, and Bret was thrilled to share the love of Jesus with everyone!

At Liberty Baptist Church, Bret became a faithful and exuberant member. Under the loving mentorship of Pastor Dan Martin, Bret thrived. He participated in Operation Christmas Child, through Samaritan’s Purse, and visited Billy Graham ministry locations in North Carolina. A highlight of Bret’s life was when he traveled internationally to participate with a mission trip to Guatemala. Bret loved seeing people’s lives changed as they learned about Jesus. Bret later attended First Baptist Church Dalhart and continued to share his testimony about the love of Jesus.

Over several years, Bret excitedly worked with Reagan & Brown Auctioneers. Bret enjoyed posting upcoming auction fliers throughout the states of Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Texas. Often these fliers were posted in cafés in small towns, which provided Bret the opportunity to meet new friends and savor good meals along the journey.

Bret was a devoted caregiver to his mother for many years. The earlier passing of his father caused Bret to be the one who prioritized meeting the needs of his mom, and he sought to bring happiness to her. Nan was grateful to have a son whose life was dedicated to Jesus.

A special friend became part of Bret’s family. This friend, with a sparkle in her eyes, had a way of wooing Bret to go for walks even when he did not feel well enough to want to go with her. She enjoyed snacking as much as he did and soon, the two became an inseparable pair. Bret’s four-footed friend was so dearly loved that Bret even refused rehabilitation, opting to go home to be with Zoey.

Bret’s life was filled with good intentions of making things better. He purchased a guitar that needed some care and enjoyed “tinkering” with the guitar, as he called it, working to restore it to the potential it deserved. Bret was so proud of himself as he worked to read the Bible in its entirety. Bret’s aspirations were admirable and exemplary – encouraging all of us to give our best in life.

In 2023, Bret moved to Amarillo, Texas, for proximity to the medical care he needed. There, Pastor Alan Burkhalter and Chaparral Hill Baptist Church gave him kindness and love. Bret’s wish is that everyone would be part of The Family and to know Jesus.

Bret passed at age 67 under the excellence of healthcare workers at BSA Hospital.

Bret Alan Stewart is preceded in death by his parents, Allen Edward and Vera Nadean “Nan” Stewart.

Bret is survived by loving cousins.
