Carl Edward Johnson, 82, of Bushland, died on Tuesday, September 19, 2017. Funeral services will be 10:00 am Saturday at Coulter Road Baptist Church with Pastor Ron Whitt officiating. Burial will be at Llano East Cemetery. Carl was born November 6, 1934 to Frank and Sip Johnson. He was born at the municipal swimming pool in Pampa, and was delivered by a mid-wife. He was part Cherokee, and was very proud of his daddy and his heritage. The family moved to Amarillo on October 31, 1940, so that Carl's father Frank could build a Jay Taylor colonial house in Wolflin. Carl graduated from Amarillo High School. He earned his BS degree from West Texas State College. He worked as a truck driver, home builder, chief chemist, and schoolteacher until his retirement. Carl lived in Sunday Canyon for many years while his children were growing up. He built the home they lived in, which was featured in Accent West in 1975. Carl met Janice Cornelsen Kite in July of 1981. On their second date, Jan's daughter, Sheri called Carl "Pa", and the name stuck. They had a three and a half year courtship. During that time, Carl joined many things in order to be with Jan. He joined the church choir, a Sunday school class, the PTA at Eastridge Elementary School, and scout pack #62. Carl proposed to Jan on Mother's Day and they were married on June 23, 1984. Carl was very active in Boy Scouts of America for over 55 years, beginning in 1945. Among other accolades, Carl earned the District Award of Merit and the Silver Beaver Award in Scouting. Life is a journey and Scouting was an important part of Carl's life. His legacy reaches six decades of service to young boys in establishing productive citizens that take care of nature, love the outdoors, and respect others.
