Charles Ray Dawson

January 2, 1931 — January 10, 2015

Charles Ray Dawson, 84, a long-time resident of Amarillo went home to be with his Lord on Saturday, January 10, 2015. The family will receive visitors from 5:00-7:00 pm Monday, January 12th at Cox Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive in Amarillo. A service celebrating his life will be held Tuesday, January 13th at 2:00 pm in the Sanctuary at First Baptist Church of Amarillo with Dr. Howard Batson, Pastor, and Corky Holland, Minister to Senior Adults, officiating. A graveside service will follow at Llano Cemetery in Amarillo. Arrangements are by Cox Funeral Home. Charles was born January 2, 1931 to John and Dollie Dawson in Amarillo. He met Ruth LaVerne Woods at a FBC youth fellowship, their kids say she swept him off his feet and they married two years later on July 15, 1950. This year they would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Charlie served during the Korean Conflict and was awarded Outstanding Trainee of his company. A few years ago he was blessed to be a part of an Honor Flight for veterans to Washington, DC. He retired from Jack Sisemore Traveland in 1993. He served as a deacon at First Baptist Church for many years. He was part of the first River Ministry group to go to Mexico and donated a fishing boat to be used for transportation across the river. He loved missions and went on numerous other trips during his life. He and his good friend Joe Tarver worked with Royal Ambassadors for 30 years. He volunteered with the Disaster Relief Team manning the CJ Humphrey Laundry Shower Unit. He was active in Heritage Choir and the Henry Brown Sunday School class. Charlie and Ruth loved leading the cooking team at Mountain High Camp for young adult head injury survivors in Red River, New Mexico. They attended camp for 20 years. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Reese Dawson and Darrell Dawson. He is survived by his wife Ruth, his sister Pat Clark of Temple, TX, his daughters Becky Davis and husband Danny of Amarillo, Melinda Frazer and husband Robert of Midlothian, TX, and son Terry Dawson and wife Cindy of New Braunfels, TX, grandchildren Jennifer Davis Maxwell and husband Aaron, Sarah Davis Clark and husband Peter, Joshua Davis, Morgan Frazer Hargrove and husband David, Berkley Frazer Beam and husband Isaac, Robert "Dawson" Frazer, Austin Frazer, and Jared Dawson, nine great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and last but definitely not least, Charlie and Ruth's little schnauzer Barney. The family would like to thank Interim Hospice for the wonderful care they have provided and the nursing staff at Plum Creek Healthcare Center.
