Claude "Don" E. Davis Jr.

Claude E. “Don” Davis Jr., 96, of Amarillo passed away Sunday, December 30, 2018. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 4, 2019 at Cox Funeral Home; 4180 Canyon Drive. The family will receive friends and loved ones for visitation Thursday, January 3, 2019 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Don was born October 5, 1922 in Des Moines, Iowa to Claude Sr. and Esther Davis. Don attended East Des Moines High School where he graduated in 1940. He also attended North Dakota State until enlisting in the military. He honorably served his country in The United States Army from 1942 to 1946 as a Staff Sergeant. Don received various medals including; The Bronze Star, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and various other awards. He married Mary Lou Spring on May 5, 1963 and moved to Amarillo in 1972. He volunteered at the local VA, calling bingo for 13 years and the VFW where he put out flags on military holidays. Don played cards in Las Vegas, but was more recently proud of winning over 5K in a bingo tournament. Don retired as a District Sales Manager after 40 years with Rock Island Railroad. He loved reading the news, sports, TIME magazine and working his Sudoku puzzles. He was an avid football and baseball fan. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren play sports. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. He will be remembered as a loving father, brother, uncle, grandpa and G-pa. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Lou Davis; son, Kyle Davis; brother, Richard Davis and sister, Cheryl Burns. Don is survived by son, Kirk Davis and fiancée Gladys; daughters, Linda Barksdale, Suzanne Drummond, Sandra Haegele and Cynthia Hoover and husband David; brother, Gary Davis and wife Marge; sister-in-law, Lois Davis and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
