Claudia Call Sams

Claudia Call Sams, 84, of Amarillo, transitioned to Heaven on Sunday, August 2, 2026. No services are scheduled at this time.

Claudia was born in Oklahoma City, OK to Earl and Winifred “Winnie” Meisenheimer. She graduated from Tascosa High School in 1959 and went on to earn a bachelor degree in Education from West Texas University, followed by a master’s degree in Library Science from North Texas University. Claudia married Oneal Call and together they raised a daughter, Cathy. Her second marriage was to Kenneth Sams in December of 1982. Kenneth preceded her in death in June 2010.

Claudia was a lifelong educator who dedicated her career to enriching the lives of others. She began as an elementary English teacher before earning her Master’s degree in Library Science and serving as a librarian for several Amarillo schools. After marrying Kenneth, she obtained her licenses and worked as a stockbroker for Edward D. Jones in Lubbock. She later returned to education in Fort Worth as a teacher, trainer, and administrator, as well as a trainer for the Boys Town Curriculum. The guiding mission of her career was ensuring students were fully prepared to complete their education and become productive, confident citizens. She held a special place in her heart for underdog students, always going the extra mile to provide them with the extra support they needed to succeed.

A voracious reader, Claudia could devour a thick novel in just a few days. She also had a deep love for music and singing, lending her voice to a Sweet Adelines Chorus for many years. After retiring, she brought that passion to her community by starting a choir at her senior living residence.

Claudia was known for her high standards and "toe the line" work ethic, yet she possessed a wonderful lighthearted side. She loved a clever play on words and could break out into a contagious, full-bellied laugh. She was also a born entrepreneur, constantly dreaming up new business ideas and side hustles. Long before home demonstration parties became popular, she launched a venture called Pots & Posies, hosting "plant parties" in local homes.

While her circle of family and friends was intimate, she loved them fiercely. Claudia was exceptionally generous—not only with her time and energy, but with her financial support. She loved writing to incarcerated women, sharing Bible studies, and sending notes of encouragement through Sharing Hope Ministries, which provides Life Recovery Bibles and materials to women in over 800 facilities. She was also a long-time supporter of Faith City Mission.

Claudia was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Kenneth Sams.

Survivors include her daughter, Cathy Wood and husband Flint of Amarillo; two grandchildren, Tory Wood and fiancé Sam of Tempe, AZ; and Taylor Wood Voss and husband Brian of Lampasas, TX; and three great-grandchildren, Brixton McCoy, Teagan Voss, and Tinsley Voss.
