Cleo Laverne Dysart-McPherson-Holcomb was born in Mobeetie, Texas on October 1, 1918. A lifelong resident of the Texas Panhandle she was a real high plains woman who was loved and admired by her family and friends throughout life. Truly part of the Greatest Generation, she grew up on a farm in Mobeetie, Texas, lived through the Texas Dust Bowl, WWII in America, and 97 years of life in Texas. In this earthly presence where few find a true love in their life, Laverne was blessed to have found two. She married Arthur B. McPherson on September 18, 1941 and into a family of four sons Ted, Art, Bob and Bill and a daughter Selma. Arthur worked for long hours and hard days for the railroad and she spent most of her life at that time raising the two youngest boys, Robert (Bob) and William (Bill) McPherson in Pampa, Texas. Her husband Arthur passed suddenly on February 26, 1963. For twenty-two years she was a widow working mostly for Barnes Jewelry in Amarillo.
Some twenty-five years later she was blessed to find a second love and married Henry A. Holcomb in 1986. The two of them traveled all over the United States for their Golden Years; mostly by car, going to every state in the country except Rhode Island and California, visiting every attraction on the map, and playing golf everywhere they could find a course.
Laverne lost her second love Henry when he passed in 2008 after a lengthy illness. Until just recent years Laverne still lived at home on her own where she took care of her garden and beautiful flowers and spent too many hours to count with her friends and family playing her favorite card game Skip Bo.
Laverne was an active and supportive member of First Baptist of Amarillo where she loved to attend services and participate in her Sunday school class. She was a devoted Christian and lived her life by God's Word. She was preceded in death by both of her husbands, the children she raised, her father, mother, brothers and sister, all of which she will see again in the Kingdom of Heaven.
The family would like to especially thank all the friends of Laverne in Amarillo who loved and took care of her like their own. So many wonderful friends have been a blessing to Laverne, but a special thanks to Mrs. Sally Tucker of Amarillo and her unending friendship and care for Laverne. In recent months Laverne had been a resident at the Ware Memorial Care Center in Amarillo and the family would also like to thank all of the staff and volunteers at the Ware Center for their comfort and compassion to Laverne.
Survivors Laverne leaves behind are grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and all the family ninety-seven years she was on this earth gave her. She will be missed and remembered by all of us.
