David P. Thomas, 85, of Amarillo, passed away on Tuesday, July 14, 2026. Funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 AM on Saturday, July 25, 2026 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 4122 S. Bonham St. with Fr. Gabriel Garcia officiating. Burial of ashes will follow at Llano East Cemetery. There will be a Rosary service at 6:30 PM on Friday, July 24, 2026 at Cox-Rowley Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Dr.
David was born March 13, 1941 in Bismarck, North Dakota to John and Georgia Thomas. He graduated from Cathedral High School in Bismarck. David went on to proudly serve in the U.S. Army for six years, during which time, he met his future wife Janet Barrett. The couple married on May 20, 1965 in Omaha, Nebraska, and enjoyed 62 years of marriage raising three children, Melissa, Jeff and Suzanne.
During his time in the military, David was stationed in Alaska. After David left the Army, he made his career in the hospitality field. He earned his degree in Hotel Management, and owned and operated many restaurants all over the country. David and Janet lived in Bismarck, North Dakota from 1969 – 1976, Hazen, North Dakota from 1976 - 1986, Las Vegas, Nevada from 1986 – 2006, and made Amarillo their home in 2006.
David was a very energetic guy who was equally feisty, determined and stubborn. He enjoyed cooking and grilling. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
David was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Jeffrey Thomas; three brothers, and Jim Thomas, John Thomas and Rick Thomas.
Survivors include his wife Janet Thomas; two daughters, Melissa Scott (Barry) of Canon City, CO, and Suzanne Thomas of Amarillo; a sister, Georgia Bauslough of Florida; five grandchildren, Zack Thomas (Shania), Jordan Thomas (Madison), Haley Thomas, Kobe Morris (Monica), and CJ Scott; and three precious great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 4122 S. Bonham, Amarillo, TX 79110.
