Don Wesley Lakey

Don Wesley Lakey, born February 13, 1962, in Salina, Kansas, passed away in Amarillo, Texas on September 11, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family and the faith that guided his life. A Celebration of Life service is scheduled for 10:00 AM Wednesday, September 16, 2026 at Trinity Fellowship Church, 5000 Hollywood Road, in the Student Ministry Building with Garvin McCarrell and Chad Mantooth officiating. 

Don's life was marked by faith, resilience, adventure, joy, and an unwavering love for the people God placed in his path. He lived with purpose, loved deeply, and approached each day with gratitude and enthusiasm for the life he had been given.

Don was preceded in death by his father, Wesley Lakey, who passed away when Don was just a kid. Throughout his life, Don often shared one cherished memory from that day: the smile on his father's face as he passed from this earthly life into Heaven. That memory stayed with Don and strengthened his faith in God's promises. In a remarkable and comforting reflection of that story, those who loved Don will forever remember that he, too, wore that same peaceful smile as he departed this world and entered the presence of his Savior.

Don was lovingly raised by his mother, Agnes Lakey, who preceded him in death and whose love and support helped shape the man he became.

A proud graduate of West Texas A&M University, Don was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, where he formed friendships that lasted a lifetime. He went on to build a successful career as the owner and operator of Don Lakey & Associates, serving the Amarillo community as a Cardiovascular Technician and working with BSA Hospital for nearly four decades. His integrity, work ethic, and genuine care for others earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues, clients, and friends alike.

More than anything, Don loved God. His faith was not simply something he professed; it was the foundation upon which he built his life. As a devoted member of Trinity Fellowship, he faithfully shared the Gospel and encouraged others to know the grace, hope, and love he had found in Christ. His greatest desire was that others would come to know the Savior he loved so deeply.

Don is survived by his beloved wife, Shauna Suzette Lakey, whom he met at Trinity Fellowship and who became the love of his life. To know Don was to know how completely he adored Shauna. Nothing brought him more joy than making her smile. Together they built a beautiful life centered on faith, family, laughter, and adventure. They traveled together, enjoyed countless Friday lunches over pizza and wine, and had a gift for turning ordinary moments into cherished memories. From spontaneous trips and shared traditions to matching Christmas pajamas that became a beloved annual event, Don and Shauna filled their home with joy, warmth, and love. Their marriage was a testament to friendship, devotion, and God's faithfulness.

In addition to Shauna, Don is survived by his children, Kinsey Dawn Lakey, Tanner Davis Lakey and his wife, Robbi Lakey, Shaun William Lakey, and Karli Grace Lakey; his treasured granddaughter, Brecklyn Grace Lakey; and his faithful fur baby and constant companion, Oliver, who brought him endless happiness and was never far from his side.

While his love for God came first, his family was a close second. Don was never content to simply watch his children grow up from a distance. He immersed himself in their lives. He coached their teams, cheered from the sidelines with his hat turned backward, celebrated their victories, comforted them through disappointments, and never missed an opportunity to show up when they needed him. As his children grew older, those relationships evolved into friendships rooted in shared passions, adventures, and countless memories. Whether it was a Tuesday phone call, a concert, a sporting event, a ski trip, an amusement park, a movie, a weekend getaway, or simply spending time together, Don found unique ways to connect with each of his children and made each of them feel deeply loved, supported, and valued. His greatest accomplishment was not found in his career, but in the family he built and the relationships he cultivated with each of them.

Among Don's greatest joys was being "Pops" to Brecklyn. Nothing made him happier than spending time with his granddaughter. He treasured every moment with her, whether it was going on adventures, sharing laughs, creating memories, or simply enjoying one another's company. He was endlessly proud of her and delighted in every opportunity to tell others about the remarkable young girl who so completely captured his heart.

Don possessed a larger-than-life personality and an adventurous spirit. He loved traveling, exploring new places, making memories with his family, and squeezing every ounce of joy from life. He loved music, laughter, great stories, and the timeless classics. His enthusiasm was contagious, his generosity was boundless, and his ability to make others feel welcome was unmatched. He celebrated life's victories, carried others through difficult seasons, and never missed an opportunity to remind those around him that they mattered.

Though his family grieves his loss deeply, they find comfort in knowing that Don's faith has become sight. His legacy lives on through the family he adored, the countless lives he touched, and the example of faith, love, joy, and perseverance he leaves behind.

If you knew Don, you knew his faith, his adventurous spirit, his music, his laughter, and his love for family. He lived boldly, loved deeply, and pointed others to Christ. Just as he never forgot the smile on his father's face as Wesley entered Heaven, we will never forget the smile on Don's face as he went home to be with the Lord.

Don will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
