Amarillo

Captain Don “Luke” Luetkahans, Ret., 83, of Amarillo, passed away on Tuesday, March 25, 2025. Celebration of Life Services will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, April 2, 2025 at Trinity Fellowship Church, Student Ministries Building, 5000 Hollywood Rd. with Pastor Richard James officiating.

Luke was born January 30, 1942 in Amarillo, Texas to Willis and Gertie Luetkahans. He graduated from Tascosa High School and went on to earn his associate degree in fire science from Amarillo College. He married the love of his life, Virginia "Ginger" Key on January 16, 1960 in Amarillo. Together, they shared 64 years of marriage and raised to children, Kevin and Kim.

Luke worked for Amarillo Fire Dept. for 34 years, many of which as fire captain, retiring in 1999. Following his retirement, Luke worked for Ross Rogers Golf Course as a Marshall for over 25 years. Side note: He had a handicap of 4.

Luke was an amazing father to his children. He was a roundup coordinator for Kids Inc. and coached all his kid’s sports teams while they were growing up. He was an accomplished athlete in his own right. He prided himself at being an avid golfer. He also played basketball and semi-pro volleyball for several years. In 1984, his team won the Fireman’s Volleyball Olympics.

Luke will always be remembered as a man who was serious about his hair, carrying a comb with him at all times. But mostly, he is remembered for being a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He was a man of strong faith and enjoyed sharing the love of Christ with others. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Virginia Luetkahans; and two sisters, Lovera Rickman and Mary Rose Buchanan.

Survivors include his son, Kevin Luetkahans and wife Kellie of Canyon; his daughter, Kim DeMasters and husband Rick of Costa Rica; a brother, Ronnie Luetkahans and wife Leta of Amarillo; two sisters, Joyce Hefner and Evelyn Richie both of Amarillo; six grandchildren, Stormie Allard and husband Grant, Nikki Luetkahans Dennis, Landon DeMasters and wife Paige, Levi DeMasters and wife Chanel, Jonathan DeMasters and wife Amanda and Austin DeMasters; and six great-grandchildren, Ember, Ivy, Dava, Walter, Addyson and Kollen.
