Donald B. "Don" Schrowangen

Donald (Don) B Schrowangen (age 84) was called home on March 1, 2019. Memorial services will be 2:00 pm Saturday, March 16, 2019 at the Khiva Shrine, 305 SE 5th St. Don was born on September 19, 1934 in Terre Haute, IN to Nina (Metcalf) and Heinrich. Don grew up in Terre Haute, IN and graduated from Gerstmeyer High School in 1952. After graduation, Don moved to Lafayette, IN and was employed at Aluminum Co of America (ALCOA). In September 1956, he married the love of his life, Rita Van Dame in Lafayette, IN. Don and Rita made their home in Traverse City, MI, Benton Harbor, MI and Battle Creek, MI with JCPenney’s. With the purchase of a Dog & Suds Drive-In franchise, the family moved to DeKalb, IL. His next sales position was at a retail fabric store in Orlando, FL. With management experience, Don took a position in a general retail store in Tallahassee, FL. Cloth World Fabrics had their radar on Don and recruited him and his family to Denver, CO. After three years, Cloth World transferred him to Amarillo. Don’s final employment before retirement was with Tech Spray LLC in Amarillo. Don and Rita loved to travel with the family.  Don and Rita experienced all fifty states either by auto or motorcycle. He was the master in planning trips that had jam-packed itineraries. Many Amarillo weekends were spent on dirt tracks riding his own Odyssey four-wheeler and competing with his two sons and grandson. He loved having large family meals and enjoying the holidays. Don was Master Mason in the Khiva Shrine Temple.  He joined the award-winning Khiva Oriental Shrine Band as a bass drummer. Don was preceded in death by his parents and his 17-year-old son, Marc. Don is survived by beloved wife, Rita of 63 years and their three remaining children, Chris (Rochelle) of Coppell, TX; Donna (Randall) Sims of Amarillo, TX and Kord T (Melissa Grant) of Amarillo, TX; four grandchildren, Kord Seth (Kylie) Schrowangen, Sabra Kincanon, Boone (Jordan) Weber, and Cassidy (David) Melton and seven great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials may be made to Ladder of Smiles, 7418 E 25th St. North, Wichita, KS 67226.
