Donald E. Trainer, 92, of Amarillo, passed away on Monday, June 9, 2025. Graveside services will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, June 18, 2025 at Llano East Cemetery, with Bret McCasland officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 PM Tuesday, June 17, 2025 at Cox-Rowley Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive.
Donald was born August 6, 1932 in McCook, Nebraska to Charles and May Trainer. At the age of 16, Donald joined the U.S. Army. He served for a short time, before joining the U.S. Air Force, where he would proudly serve for the next 21 years until his retirement. Donald married his wife, Betty and together they raised two children. After Betty’s passing in 2009, Donald married Flora in 2010. In 1964, Donald opened Willow Creek Kennels, which he owned and operated for many years. Later, he and Flora opened Precious Pets Hotel in 2018.
Donald was a man of great faith. His passion was to read and study his Bible daily, reading several chapters every day. He preached to the Laotion Community and even performed the wedding ceremonies for his kids, Sarah and Brady, and Monica and Lile. He was an elder in the church, having attended Southwest Church of Christ and Church of Christ at the Colonies. Donald dedicated himself to helping others with any need that they had.
Donald loved spending time with his grandkids, teaching them about the Bible and attending their school events and games. He enjoyed working outside, landscaping, planting trees, gardening, and feeding the birds and squirrels. He was so proud of his time in the military and loved to talk to people about his service. He enjoyed watching old war movies and rode his stationary bike 20 miles every day. Donald will be greatly missed by his family, friends, church and community.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Betty Trainer; a granddaughter, Allison; three brothers, Richard Trainer, Orville Trainer and Kenneth Trainer; two sisters, Opal Gregg and Ethel McWilliams.
Survivors include his wife, Flora Scheutzow-Trainer; sons, Don Trainer and wife Tracey, and John Olivas all of Amarillo; daughters, Phyllis Boughton of Allen, TX, Sarah Olivas-Rex and husband, Brady of Amarillo, and Monica Anderson and husband Lile; 15 grandchildren, Toby Trainer and wife Christie, Amanda Pearson, Kieran Pearson, Jayden Olivas-Rex, Evangeline Contreras, Kenyze Contreras, Lyric Olivas, Berkeley, Liberty, Skyler Olivas, Yancy Olivas, Aidan Olivas, Ashton Stockard, Larry Anderson and Patricia Natarajan; six great-grandchildren, Sean, Natalie, Nora, Coco, Myra and Christian.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Donald E. Trainer Benefit fund, with Amarillo National Bank, in person; for the benefit of his grandchildren's college fund.
