Mr. Boyd was born Jan. 15, 1932, in Bogalusa, La., to Donnie A. and Doretha Boyd. He joined the Air Force on July 5, 1951. He taught air frame repair at Amarillo Air Base for three years and nine months. He decided to stay in Amarillo and attended Amarillo College and graduated from West Texas State College.
He married Lera Hudson Boyd on July 3, 1957. He worked for Western National Life for 13 years before starting his own business, Southwestern Insurance Agency.
His sons, Eddie and Ernie joined him in the business in the early 1980s and evolved the business into a financial services firm, Boyd Financial Services, Inc. Donnie was thrilled to work with his boys and went into work everyday until the last couple of months. Donnie was always an example of service to his sons. When they were students at Paramount Terrace Elementary School, he was elected president of the PTA and was the first male PTA president to serve in Amarillo. He was a great businessman, a trusted advisor, and a true friend to all.
Donnie served as a deacon, department outreach leader, and was on and chaired numerous committees at First Baptist Church. He and Lera served together in Young Musicians Choir for 30 years, waiting until their youngest grandchildren finished fourth grade before retiring. Mr. Boyd was also active with Gideons. He was involved with High Plains Retreat Center, where he served as the first president of the organization. He personally directed the remodel of one of the cabins and was honored to have it named "The Boyd Cottage." It will be used by pastors to have a place for rest and renewal for years to come.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Donnie and Doretha Boyd; a brother, Horace Boyd; two brothers-in-law, Leon Hudson and James Moss; a sister-in-law, Lela Hudson Moss; and a daughter-in-law, Carmen Newbill Boyd.
Survivors include his wife Lera; two sons, Eddie Boyd and wife Lisa and Ernie Boyd and wife Delisa; seven grandchildren, Caroline Boyd Rogers and husband Drew, David Boyd, Harrison Boyd, Alexandra Boyd, Christopher Damon, Ashli Damon and Addison Damon; two sisters, Barbara Boyd Lott and Betty Boyd Branch; and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
