Dora was born April 2, 1930 in Des Moines, Iowa to Esther and John Struth. She graduated from East High School in Des Moines, attended Drake University and received her nursing degree from TVI Albuquerque School of Nursing. She married Ed Norem, a dashing young Air Force pilot, on June 21, 1952 in Lubbock. Dora and Ed made a career of the Air Force, traveling to all fifty states as well as several foreign countries. Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, NM was their final duty station. Prior to retirement, Dora served as president of the Officer's Wives Club at Kirtland while Ed was the Base Operations Officer.
After retiring from the Air Force, Dora and Ed travelled throughout New Mexico, Southern Colorado, and West Texas as Ed's second career was a safety inspector for a large insurance company. One of her greatest joys during this time was bringing the grandchildren along as they travelled. As Ed made his rounds, Dora and the grandkids would enjoy the hotel pool and take advantage of every shopping venue available.
Dora and Ed moved to Amarillo in 1996 so that they could be closer to their children and grandchildren. Dora immediately became active in her church and Sunday School class. She and Ed were also long-term season ticket holders and supporters of the Little Theater and the Amarillo Symphony.
A member of First Baptist Church in her later years, Dora was a true Christian lady, always thinking of others, rather than herself. She was a loving wife and mother, making family the central part of her life. She loved every minute with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Dora also enjoyed cooking for family gatherings, sewing and gardening.
Dora is preceded in death by her parents, a son, Ron Norem and by her mother-in-law and father-in-law. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Ed Norem; her children, Connie Swicegood and
husband Steve, Debbie Norem all of Amarillo, and Tim Norem of Albuquerque, NM; 7 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
