Dorothy Jane Rowzee

November 19, 1934 — August 24, 2024

Union, Mississippi

Dorothy “Dot” Rowzee, 89, of Amarillo, Texas, passed peacefully from this world to be with her Savior on August 24, 2024. Celebration of Life services are scheduled for 3:00 PM Sunday September 1, 2024 at Pickney Baptist Church, 497 Pickney Church Road in Union, Mississippi with Brother Harold Rowzee officiating.

Dorothy was born on November 19, 1934, in Jackson, Mississippi to Coleen and Maury Lundy. She is originally from Union, MS, living in Amarillo the past 15 years. During the Great Depression, Dorothy quickly learned to rely on the Lord. It was during this time as a child that she learned to sing hymns in her Sunday school. She never let go of their words and meaning throughout all her life. There was never a day that she couldn't be heard quietly singing the verses as she made food for the family or went about the house playing with her grandchildren, or on the ride to Sunday service. She rejoiced in the Lord through her praise, and she taught us to do the same. She was comforted by these same hymns in her passing. Her daughter sang them softly to her throughout the night that she passed.

Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory? I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.

“Abide with me” by Audrey Assad

Dorothy was the kind of woman that delighted in the presence of her friends and family. She would often call her family just to let them know she loved them. She loved to sit down at the dining room table with her children and grandchildren to dig into a puzzle, even though inevitably at the end there would be one lost piece. She absolutely refused to sit and chat with anyone, unless she was allowed to make them a meal, or at least a cup of coffee.

And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work.

2 Corinthians 9:8

Dorothy trusted the Lord in all things, and she wasn’t simply a Sunday Christian. Dorothy’s faith was deeply rooted. She always put the needs of others before her own, and she faced this world’s challenges face-first, hand-in-hand with Christ. As a single mother of four young children, Dorothy not only provided for them emotionally, spiritually, and financially, she worked full-time as a nurse, and she even gained her Masters and just shy of dissertation in Doctorate program in the midst of wrangling her children. We are, forever, in awe of her resilience, perseverance, and steadfastness in her work and in her faith. After many years working across Mississippi- Jackson, Union, Philadelphia, Natchez, and Grenada as a nurse, a teacher of nursing and psychiatry; culminating in Director of Nursing at Jeff Davis Memorial Hospital in Natchez, and finally at BSA hospital in Amarillo, Texas.

By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, to his name.

Hebrews 13:15

Dorothy is now with the Lord. And it brings great peace to our family that they both will be watching over us during this time of mourning. We will miss the sound of her voice, the warmth of her embrace, and the joy she carried with her into every room she entered. Although our hearts are heavy from the loss, we have an unending joy in knowing we will see her again. In the meantime, we will thank the Lord for the memories we had with her and the love we shared. She was a wonderful woman. Dorothy was, to each of us, our constant companion – our unremitting friend.

Dorothy is predeceased by her mother, Coleen and father, Maury; her sister Mary Ann; and three of her children, Ted (Rocky) Ruben Rowzee, Rex Harvey Rowzee, and Sheila Ann Chester.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Rita Morrow and husband Paul of Amarillo, Texas; her sister, Betty Reeves and husband Randy of Axis, AL; her brother Ronny White and wife, Martha of Philadelphia, MS.; her eight grandchildren; Joshua Morrow and wife Macy from Wimberley, Texas; Joseph Morrow and wife Haley of Richmond, Texas; Daniel Morrow of Amarillo, Texas; Christi Fletcher and husband, Chris of Florence, MS; Lundy Chester of Pearl, MS; Austin Chester of Ridgeland, MS; and siblings, Jeremy and Haley Rowzee both of Vidalia, LA. And ten great- grandchildren.

Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

1 Thessalonians 4:17
