Floyd Gafford, 90, of Amarillo, passed away on Tuesday, November 19, 2024. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Saturday, November 23, 2024 at the Colonies Church of Christ, 4500 Wesley Rd. with Bret McCasland officiating. Graveside services will be at 2:30 PM Saturday at Dreamland Cemetery in Turkey, Texas. Public viewing will be Friday from 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM at Cox-Rowley Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive.
Floyd was born September 2, 1934 in Quitaque, Texas to George and Jackie Gafford. At the age of six, Floyd’s mother passed away suddenly. He gained a step-mother, Judy Gafford, who raised him as her own. Floyd graduated from Turkey High School and went on to proudly serve in the U.S. Navy.
Floyd married the love of his life, Bettie Abston, on June 7, 1956 in Clovis, New Mexico. Together, they raised five children, Geri, George Glenn, Rocky, Scotty and Montye. Floyd adored his wife and was a hopeless romantic. The couple renewed their vows on their 58th wedding anniversary. They celebrated 68 years of marriage earlier this year.
Floyd worked in the grocery business as a district manager for Furr’s for 26 years, followed by Albertson’s for 10 years. This career resulted in a lot of moves for the family. They lived in Idaho, Dallas, Phoenix, Albuquerque, Muleshoe, Pampa and Amarillo to name a few. He retired in 1996.
In his spare time, Floyd kept busy by volunteering many hours with the Rotary Club, where he was also named a “Paul Harris Fellow”. He and Bettie enjoyed traveling to various places, including Hawaii, Alaska and Canada. They were active members of the Colonies Church of Christ for many years. Floyd will be remembered for being a kind and loving man, who was well admired in his community. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-mother, Judy Gafford; a son, George Glenn Gafford; a brother, George Gafford; and a sister, Chicquetah Hensley.
Survivors include his wife, Bettie Gafford; three sons, Rocky Gafford (Sabrina) of Amarillo, Scotty Gafford (Sheryl) of Chehails, WA, and Montye Gafford (Rosemary) of Hereford; a daughter, Geri Kitrell of San Bernadino, CA; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorial donations may be made to the High Plains Children’s Home of Amarillo.
