Foy Tharp, 89, died Tuesday, October 31, 2017 in Amarillo, Texas. Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm Saturday, November 4, 2017 at Church at Quail Creek, 801 Tascosa Rd. with Associate Pastor Dale Moreland officiating. Burial will be at Dreamland Cemetery in Canyon. Foy was born November 4, 1927 in Blue Springs, Alabama to Grady and Lucy Lee Hughes Tharp. Foy met Ruby Heiskell in Belton, Texas when he was serving in the army and she was attending Mary Hardin Baylor College. They married on August 17, 1947. A WWII Veteran, Mr. Tharp served in the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Hood near Killeen, Texas. He served as a special courier for army military officers and was awarded numerous medals of accomplishment. Foy was a talented carpenter lending his expertise to several building projects in New Mexico and Dalhart, Texas as well as being an accomplished whittler, he spent many hours fashioning elaborate walking sticks and small scottie dogs (his favorite) and enjoyed giving them to family and friends. He will be memorialized as having a sharp wit and always having a smile for everyone he met. His love of life and special outlook (ornery twinkle in his eye) on life will long be remembered by his loved ones. He was also a farmer for many years in Dallam County, Texas. Foy is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one sister and a grandson. Foy is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Ruby Tharp; 3 children, Janice Tharp Stockett and husband James of Amarillo, Beth Tharp Varner and husband Russ of Medellin, Colombia, and Mark Tharp and wife Cindy of Canyon; five grandchildren, Kyle and Olivia Alexander of Dallas, Brittni Alexander and Dr. Chin Ho of Norwood, NY, Chris and Lisa Stevenson of Amarillo, Shane Stevenson of Dalhart, Drs. Matthew and Kassandra Varner of Cape Coral, FL and Kara Varner of Minneapolis, MN, Marshall and Sarah Tharp of San Angelo; five great grandchildren; and one great-great grandson. The family respectfully requests memorials to be sent to the Thomas E. Creek Veterans Community Living Center, 6010 Amarillo Blvd West, Amarillo, TX 79106. The family will receive friends 6:00-8:00 pm Friday at the funeral home.
