George Byron Merchant, 71, of Amarillo, passed away November 18, 2014. He was buried in a private ceremony on November 21, at Memorial Park Cemetery, Amarillo.
Byron was born in Bremerton, WA, September 8, 1943, where his father was employed during WWII. His family soon returned to their native Amarillo. Byron graduated from Amarillo High School in 1962, where he played trumpet in band. He attended Amarillo College and West Texas State University before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Reserves, serving circa 1964 to 1970. He married his first wife in 1967 then moved to Irving, TX, where he had his first child. He returned to Amarillo in 1979 and remarried in 1981. He resided briefly in Las Vegas, NV, where he had his second child. He returned for life to Amarillo in 1983.
He was a loyal and dedicated fan of the Texas Rangers and Dallas Cowboys. He loved to fish and hunt pheasant.
His parents, George Bernard Merchant and Vera Randolph Merchant, preceded him in death. He is survived by daughter Tracie Merchant-Leatherwood of Roanoke, TX; adopted stepson Daniel Merchant and daughter Holly Curatolo, both of Vancouver, WA; sisters, Myrna Pillars of Green Valley, AZ, and Penny Cunningham of Amarillo, TX.
