Gus was born on December 21, 1930 in Phillips to George and Edith Hampton. He was raised in Borger, where he graduated from Borger High School in 1950. He married Barbara Gaither on October 14, 1951 in Borger. Gus enlisted in the United States Navy in 1950, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1954. He attended the University of New Mexico, where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Education before attending West Texas A&M University, earning his Master's Degree in Art. Gus went to work as a teacher and coach in 1958 and worked at Horace Mann Middle School and Bowie Middle School before retiring after 31 years in 1989. He then went to work for Wilhite Refrigeration and retired after 14 years of employment. He was a talented artist, and loved to paint. Most importantly, Gus will be remembered as a coach, on the field, but also as a life coach who mentored to many people, especially his family. He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Alferd Hampton and sister, Georgia Womack.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Hampton of Amarillo; 3 daughters, Dana Lineman and husband Mike of Fort Worth and Patti Lineman and husband Jerry of Amarillo and Julia Howell of Amarillo; son, David Hampton of Amarillo; sister, LaVaughn Back of Amarillo; brother, Gene Sewell and wife Rita of Amarillo; mother-in-law, Bess McGrew of Amarillo; 13 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren.
