Hazel Lois Gwin

February 25, 1927 — April 27, 2017

Hazel Lois Gwin, 90 year-old long-time resident of Amarillo, and more recently, Woodward, Okla., died April 27, 2017, in Amarillo. Hazel was born Feb. 25, 1927, in Cowgill, Mo., to Johnson and Nannie Ferkins Trusty. She grew up on a farm near Hamilton, Mo., graduating New York High School in 1944. While in high school, she worked in Kansas City at various jobs including being a live-in nanny and envelope stuffer at Hallmark Cards. After graduation, she was hired by the Board of Education near Hamilton to teach in a one-room classroom school house. In 1945, Hazel began employment with federal government giving civil service exams in Clovis, N.M. There, she met and married Clarence Earl Gwin in Carlsbad, N.M., after a 3-month romance. They lived in Portales, N.M. and later in Clovis for 11 years. In 1957 they moved to Amarillo, where Hazel worked for Farmers Home Administration until 1960. Hazel then obtained a real estate license and worked as a realtor in Amarillo for several more years. She was a member of Polk Street United Methodist Church in Amarillo. Hazel enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking, waterskiing, camping and playing dominoes, bridge and scrabble. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Gwin; her parents; two brothers, George Williams "Bill" and Edwin D. Trusty; and two sisters, Edythe Maginness and Christine Fisher. Survivors include a son, Jimmy Earl and wife Bonnie Gwin of Amarillo; and a daughter, Janis Kay and husband Harold Jerry McAllister of Woodward, OK. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Lori Clark of Broomfield, CO, Damon and Cynthia McAllister of Woodward, OK, Rachel and Eric Andrews of Woodward, OK, Brady and Jennifer Munsell of Bossier City, LA, Brian and Ashlee Gwin of Amarillo and Coby and Lesley Munsell of Canyon, TX; and her great-grandchildren, Layla, Lydia and Lileana Clark of Broomfield , CO, Campbell and Thompson McAllister of Sharon, OK, Tryston and Jadon Shepherd, Logan Andrews and Jaxon Allison of Vici, OK, Jackson Munsell and Zach Shafer of Bossier City, LA, Callahan, Kiptyn, Cavington Munsell of Canyon, Cannon Gwin of Canyon, TX, Corbyn Gwin of Amarillo, TX, Rubee and Avelynn Smith of Amarillo.
