Herman Otto Shirly Jr., 88, of Amarillo, passed away on Sunday August 22, 2021 in Amarillo. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday August 25, 2021 at Cox-Rowley Funeral home, 4180 Canyon Drive with Pastors Billy Snider and Oliver Offutt officiating. Herman will be available for viewing on Tuesday August 24, 2021 from 12:00 – 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Cox-Rowley Funeral Home.

Herman was born in Springfield, Massachusetts to Herman and Viola Shirly. He joined the United States Air Force and came to Amarillo in 1953. He worked in Smelter for 12 years before going into banking. Herman earned his undergraduate and masters at night while working full time. He spent 50 years in banking industry, most of which he was with Bank One and Herring National Bank as VP and Sr. Trust officer.

Herman enjoyed golfing and bowling. He met his wife Mary Helen Shirly in 1995 and they married in 1996. They were looking forward to celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary in December of 2021. He was proud that Mary introduced him to church and Herman gave his life to the Lord and was baptized on his 65th birthday. They loved to country dance, watch the Boston Red Sox games and travel. Herman’s peaceful place was visiting Dan and Tiffany in Corpus Christi and sitting at the Ship Channel in Port Aransas, watching the ships coming in.

Herman was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, David Shirly.

Survivors include his wife Mary Shirly of the home; children by marriage, Marshall Gill (Joye), Tiffany Whiteside (Dan) of Corpus Christi and Ashley Sharp (Justin) of Amarillo; Grandchildren, Troy Wade and Rayven Gill; one brother, Donald  Shirly (Judy) of Wilbraham Massachusetts; nieces, Maryanne Peterson (John) of Wilbraham, MA, Donna Farrell (Barry) of Holyoke, MA, Suzanne Shirly of Amarillo and Jennifer Ledbetter (Nick) of Frisco; several great nieces and nephews; Lifelong friends of 50 years, Gary and Linda Haynie; Goddaughter, Elizabeth Pedroza; grandchildren by choice, Sariah Williams, Xavier Williams and Isaiah Williams.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr Amaro and the High Plains Hospice Staff.
