Jack was born Jan. 17, 1926, in Comanche County to Horace and Alva Smith. He grew up and attended school in Sidney and later graduated from Daniel Baker College in Brownwood. Jack proudly served his country in the Navy during World War II from 1944 to 1946. He married Nadine McCown in 1947, and they settled in Amarillo in 1963, where they spent the remaining years of their lives and raised their family.
After graduating college, Jack was a school teacher, but later made his career in the insurance business for more than 35 years. He was devoted to his family and spent most of his time coaching youth sports, attending ball games or other school functions, and any other activities that involved his children and grandchildren.
After retirement, Jack and Nadine spent many years traveling in their motor home and working at Fun Valley Resort in South Fork, Colo., during the summers.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nadine; twin daughters, Candy and Sandy; his parents; and three sisters, GayNel, Jean and Patsy.
Survivors include two sons, Grant and wife Maxine of Amarillo and Blane and wife Sherri of Cedar Park; a daughter, Carol Portwood and husband J. of Keller; a sister, Betty Fritts and husband Joe of Weatherford; a brother-
in-law, James McCown and wife Janice of Amarillo; seven grandchildren, Lindsey Smith Arbeiter and husband Chase, Erin Smith McCarty and husband Neal, Connor Smith and wife Cami, Michael Smith, Colton Portwood, Tyler Portwood and McKenna Portwood; two great-grandsons, Jackson and Jett; and numerous nieces and nephews.
