Isabell (Lujan) Thompson

On Wednesday, December 2, 2020, Isabell Luján Thompson, loving wife, mother and grandmother, passed away at the age of 84. Isabell was born on August 13, 1936 in Mora County, New Mexico to Espeto Luján and Soraida Salazar. On September 6, 1957, she married Rueben Boyd Thompson, and they raised three children, Connie, Curtis and Carla.  She first studied at Eastern New Mexico University and later received both a Bachelor degree and a Master of Education degree in Reading from West Texas State University. Isabell taught for 20 years at Eastridge Elementary School in Amarillo, and Gateway Elementary in Borger until her retirement. She then taught English as a Second Language to adults and tutored Spanish-speaking adults for the GRE test.  She was a member of an area philanthropic service sorority. Isabell had a large heart and always wanted others to succeed. She was a strong, positive force for her family through the years. She fought for justice in many ways, especially for those who she loved.   Isabell committed her life to learning and encouraging others to seek higher education.  She was known as kind and generous by many. Isabell was preceded in death by her father, Espeto, her mother, Soraida, her sister, Priscilla, brothers Emilio and Alfred, her sister, Evelyn and a daughter who was born prematurely, Helen Lynn. She is survived by her husband, Rueben, her three children, Connie and husband, Mike, Curtis and his partner, Joe, and Carla and her wife, Amanda; her grandchildren, John and wife Katie, Nathan, Aaron and wife Monica, August and wife Micah, Emma, and Caleb; her sister Helen, and many beloved nieces, and nephews and their families. Services are pending due to the current quarantine restrictions. Memorials celebrating Isabell’s life can be made by donating to the mission of the Amarillo Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. www.uuamarillo.org.
