Jack Dempsey, 79, of Amarillo, passed away on Saturday, December 10, 2022. Graveside services will be 2:00 PM Thursday at Llano East Cemetery with Dr. Buddy Young officiating.
Jack was born March 27, 1943 in Amarillo, Texas. He was named after the famous boxer, Jack Dempsey. Jack proudly served in the U.S. Air Force, where he was an office administrator in Turkey and Germany. He married the love of his life, Jan on December 31, 1995. Jack was a police officer, having worked for APD 15 years, and then Potter Co. Sheriff’s Office for 9 years. He was also an excellent private investigator. Jack and Jan enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S. Jack was a good friend and mentor to many people. He changed many young people’s lives and made certain they were always safe from harm and trouble. He had a contagious laugh and could be quite ornery. When Jan developed Alzheimer’s disease, Jack became the full-time caregiver for her. When Jan had to be placed in a care facility, Jack still tended to her, caring for her and taking her ice cream every single day, until her death in 2017. Jack will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jan; and two half-brothers.
Survivors include his sister, Donna Griffin of Tulsa, OK; his brother-in-law, Jim Bryant; his step-grandchildren, Jayden and Lexie; and close friends, Ellen and Dallas.
The family suggests memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, at www.stjude.org.
