James was born on September 23, 1937 in St. Paul, NC to James and Flowers Carter. He was raised in North Carolina, where he enlisted in the United States Air Force at the age of 16. He proudly served in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War as an aviation mechanic and also worked as an instructor at the Air Base. He retired from the Air Force and was honorably discharged after 23 years of service. James married Nancy Houston in 1968 in Alabama. Upon his retirement from military service, he went to work for the Texas Highway Department as a mechanic and then as a preventative maintenance inspector. He later retired at the age of 62 in 1999. James enjoyed bowling and playing on softball leagues, but his passion and most proud accomplishment was his involvement in the building of River Road Fellowship Church. He and Nancy were longtime members of the church
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Carter of Amarillo; 2 sons, Kelly Glenn Carter and wife Sandra and Edward Karl Carter, all of Amarillo; 3 grandchildren, Brittiany Renae Arceneaux, Taylor Elizabeth Broadus, Jordan James Carter and a great grand daughter Jae-lyn Trissabelle Guereque; 2 brothers, Karl, Robert and sister, Shirley Carter.
He is preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers and a sister
