James “Jim” E Hayes, 87, passed away on January 21, 2025. Born in Sedalia, MO to George and Catherine Hayes. He was preceded in death by both parents, five of his siblings, his wife, Martha and his daughter-in-law, Ruddie.
And is survived by one sister, Kathy Johnson of KY, his daughter Kelly Hayes and son-in-law Billy Chitty of Amarillo, TX, his son David Hayes of Osceola, IA, grandchildren Dallyse & Brandon Sharber, Beth & Josh Auderer and Aaron Hayes-Martinez. He also has 3 great-grandchildren: Austyn, Jett and Bowen.
To many, Jim was a larger-than-life figure with an infinite capacity for love and kindness. Born to make an impression on the world, his life was one of devotion, determination, and joy.
At just 17 years old, Jim declared on his very first date with Martha that he would marry her. And at 19, true to his word, he married her vowing to love her for as long as he lived—and even longer. They shared a beautiful 52-year marriage until Martha’s passing in 2008. Their love story is a testament to unwavering commitment and faith in God, and the family finds peace knowing they are joyfully reunited, with Martha undoubtedly scolding him for taking his time.
Together, Jim and Martha built a family centered on love, laughter, and hard work. They raised two children and welcomed grandchildren — all who brought them immense pride and joy. Though Martha did not get the opportunity to share in the joy of great-grandchildren, Jim carried enough love and pride for them both.
Jim worked many years in pipeline construction and the family was greatly blessed with the opportunities of traveling to many parts of the country and meeting and becoming friends with a multitude of people. In the mid 80’s, as a natural entrepreneur, he owned and operated his own businesses, embodying a relentless curiosity and an enduring drive to provide for his family. He was highly respected by many – and often referred to as a ‘walking encyclopedia’ because he was very informed and wise in a variety of fields. His desire to learn and grow never ceased, and his legacy is marked by his generosity and selflessness. Whether helping a friend or a stranger, Jim’s willingness to lend a hand often came at his own expense, a reflection of his compassion and obedience to God.
He was a man of strength, kindness, and humor—equally at ease being silly with his grandkids as he was offering sage advice to anyone lucky enough to know him. To know Jim was to admire him, to love him, and to feel inspired by his example.
Jim’s family takes comfort in the knowledge that he is at peace and reunited with Martha, undoubtedly filling heaven with his humor and love. Though he is deeply missed, his spirit lives on in the lives he touched.
