James V. “Jimmy” Gonzales, 69, died peacefully Friday, December 11, 2020, from COVID-19 with his wife and two children by his side.
He was born in Tucumcari, NM to parents Joe L. and Lucy Gonzales. He married his high school sweetheart, Veda Herrera, in Amarillo, TX in 1970. A man of integrity and commitment, Jimmy accomplished so much in his lifetime. He proudly served in the US Air Force as a First Sergeant, “First Shirt”, later retiring as a Master Sergeant. Once transferring into the Air Force reserves, he was also employed at Pantex. During this time, he worked to earn his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Wayland Baptist University. Also while serving in the reserves, Jimmy was deployed and served in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He thoroughly enjoyed traveling, especially on the extended motorcycle trips he took annually with his beloved motorcycle club. Too, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was beyond generous with his time and resources and loved helping people. Jimmy was a faithful member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Amarillo for many years. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Max and Samuel Gonzales, and sisters Corine Sisneros and Bernice Martinez. He is survived by his wife Veda, son Mark Gonzales and daughter Jackie Thomas and husband Jason, of Amarillo, TX, sisters Helen Garcia of Yukon, OK, Dorothy Martinez, Mary Garcia, and Debbie Jennings of Amarillo, grandchildren Rhys Mott-Gonzales and SJ Thomas of Amarillo, Sarah Gonzales of Lubbock, TX, and Lauren and Savannah Gonzales, and great grandson Lochlan Vasquez of San Marcos, TX, as well as countless other loved ones. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the USO and the 100 Club of the Texas Panhandle. Services are being conducted by the Cox-Rowley Funeral Home, and in order to prevent the further spread of this virus, they will be reserved for immediate family only.
