James Alan Ragan, 86, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2026. The family will be holding service at a later date.
James was born May 20, 1939 in Sioux City, Iowa to Harold and Grace Ragan. He grew up in Lawrence, Kansas, where he attended Lawrence High School and excelled in sports. James met and married the love of his life, Sandra Harris in Lawrence, Kansas in 1959. Together they shared 67 years of marriage, 4 wonderful children and many amazing memories.
James continued his education at the Kansas University, earning his Master’s degree. A lifelong sports enthusiast, he enjoyed football, basketball, track, tennis, baseball, and golf. He shared that passion with his children, coaching their teams as they grew up.
After completing his studies at KU, James began his career as a teacher before becoming a Certified Life Underwriter. He worked for Mutual Benefit Life and later for Insurance Designs, where he remained until his retirement.
He was an active member of the Jaycees, James valued his community and service. In February 2023, he and his wife relocated to Amarillo from Kansas, embracing a new chapter of life together. James loved spending time with his friends and family, creating memories filled with laughter, connection, and care. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and his sister Barbara Felts.
Survivors include his loving and devoted wife, Sandra; his daughter, Brenda Thompson and her husband Roger of Amarillo, TX; his three sons, Brad Ragan of Tiffan, Iowa; Brian Ragan of Prairie Village, KS; Brett Ragan of Honolulu, Hawaii; his 8 grandchildren, Kyle, Whitney, Allison, James, Christian, Stephon, Joshua, and Jacob; and 12 great-grandchildren; his brother Kenneth Regan of Bonner Springs, KS. Survivors also include a host of other family members and dear friends.
