Jim was born in Kearney, Nebraska, June 6, 1950, to Jim and Dee Van Marter. He was a proud American, serving his country in the Vietnam War with the Navy and then going on to make it a career. While serving, he received several awards and commendations, including Combat Action Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, 2 National Defense Service Medals, 5 Good Conduct Awards, Navy Commendation Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy Achievement Medal, 34 Recruiting Gold Wreath Awards, Navy Recruiting Ribbon with 3 Bronze Stars, Meritorious Unit Commendation with a Silver Star, to name a few. After retirement, he maintained his relationship with the military, helping veterans through the VA system until his health prevented him from doing so. He was also an avid golfer.
He is survived by his wife: Valerie Van Marter of Amarillo; daughter: Melody Fagih and husband Jason of San Antonio; 2 grandchildren: Avery and Parker; parents: Jim and Dee Van Marter of Holdrege, NE; brother: Dave Van Marter of Orlando, FL; and a number of other relatives and friends
