Obedient daughter, Caring sister, Creative woman. Devoted mother, Supportive wife.
Born February 23, 1947, in Bakersfield, California to George and Margaret (Margo) Truran, she lived her first years in the oil leases surrounding that city where her father worked for the Getty Oil Company. As he advanced in the company, the family relocated many times between southern California and Houston, Texas. She credited these frequent moves as providing her both the resilience to manage change, make friends, and her abysmal ability to spell. She enjoyed active participation in Girls Scouts, especially remember the outdoor activities and the desire of the girls in the troop to always travel with Mrs. Truran, as her driving was an ‘adventure’. She graduated from Bellaire High School and first attended Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, relocating to the University of Houston Main Campus to receive her Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, with a focus on printmaking. She held numerous jobs in Houston, eventually working at the main branch of the Houston Public Library. This led her to return to school at Texas Women’s University in Denton, Texas, where she earned a Master of Library Science. She then returned to Houston and re-joined Christ the King Lutheran church where she had been an active member. There she met Robert Roulston, a laboratory technician at the Texas Medical Center. After a growing friendship, they married at Christ the King on August 4, 1979, and moved into the Houston Heights, where she eventually became the branch assistant librarian, then leaving HPL to become the librarian at Brock Elementary school (HISD) – providing many services for the children and faculty.
In 1990, the family, now joined by daughter Jessica (08/25/1985), relocated to southwest Ohio. Finding that she was over-qualified to obtain a job as a librarian, either academic or public, Jane stepped back into her qualifications as a print maker, discovering the joy of working with art rubber stamping. She taught classes on composition and style at local and national venues for three years, before relocating with her family (now with a son, David, (07/22/1993)) in 1994.
Jane quickly found kindred souls and artists upon the family’s arrival in Amarillo, volunteering and teaching at the local shop, Texas 2 Stamp. She expanded her expertise into working with Polymer Clay, Art-grade Shrink Plastic/Beaded Jewelry, Mono-Printing, Hooked Rug design. She continued to provide classes at stores and conventions. With the encouragement of her family, she began exhibiting and selling her works, which brought her great joy while spending time with other creative vendors and people looking to enrich their lives.
Jane was raised in the Episcopal church; becoming an active member of Lutheran Church in America and Evangelical Lutheran Church in America congregations as she moved around the country. Her strong faith and wide group of supportive friends buoyed her during the crises that she experienced.
On June 11, 2023, Jane died peacefully in Amarillo, Texas. She is survived by her husband, Bob, her two children, Jessica and David, her younger brother, David, and next generation family Daniel, Alex, Sarah and Michael. She also survives in the lives of the servers, students, artists, friends, hospitality service personnel whom she met and shared life. There was still work that she wanted to do, places and people she wanted to visit and meet. Grateful for the chance to experience all her life, it is time for her to thank the ONE who made it all possible.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that a memoriam in Jane's name be made to Amarillo Area CASA located at 112 S.W. 8th Ave. #101, Amarillo, Texas 79101.
