Janice was born on May 21,1939, in Miami, Texas to Burl and Mary “Sue” Chesher. After the family moved to Amarillo, she graduated from Palo Duro High School in 1957. That same year she married Wendell Gene Sluder. They traveled extensively, during his military deployment, with stops in Georgia, Washington, and San Antonio. They settled in Amarillo where they raised their family and remained life-long residents. Janice and Wendell were married 58 years, until his death in 2016.
She was a homemaker, devoted mother, and grandmother. Janice was a great cook. Her family and friends enjoyed many meals at the house, but Thanksgiving Day was her day to shine. She will always be remembered by her children and grandchildren for her Green Jello dish and possibly the world’s greatest dressing for holiday dinners.
Janice enjoyed gardening and was a talented floral arranger. She loved watching movies. She was a long-time member of First Baptist church in Amarillo and dearly loved the fellowship of her Sunday School Department and Adult Choir. She also worked for years in the church’s children’s ministry.
If Janice wanted you to know one thing, it was that she loved Jesus. She took the Biblical mandate to always pray very seriously. She studied her bible avidly throughout her life, studied Biblical languages, and read constantly to know her Savior better.
She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Janice was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Phillip Chesher, and her husband, Wendell Gene Sluder.
Survivors include two daughters, LaNell Martindale and husband Mike of Lubbock and Wendy Parker of Fort Worth. She is also survived by three grandchildren – Bree (Bailey) Hancock and husband Cody of Ft. Worth, Brant Countiss of Ft. Worth, and Mackenzie Martindale of Houston.
