Jerrel Rex Mulkey

Jerrel Rex Mulkey, 86, of Amarillo died February, 14, 2019. Services will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday at First Baptist Church Sanctuary, 1208 S. Tyler St. with Dr. Howard Batson officiating. Burial will be at Llano Cemetery in Amarillo. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 pm Monday at Cox Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Dr. Rex was born January 22,1933 to Robert Royalton Mulkey and Ann Katheryn Carlton in Medicine Mound, Texas. Rex graduated from Amarillo High School in 1951. He worked as a mail carrier, a carpenter and a construction estimator. He married Carol Ann Smith on February 13, 1954. They were married 65 years and one day before his passing. Rex was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, 10th grade Sunday School teacher and as a youth sponsor for many youth ski trips and outings. He enjoyed coaching his children in youth sports and assisting in their other activities. Rex always stayed busy when he wasn't working or volunteering at church. He loved spending time with his family and watching his children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; son Brent Mulkey and grandson Tanner Shuman. Rex is survived by his wife, Carol Mulkey; two daughters, Michele Gibson and husband Gary, and Ashley Odneal and husband Dennis; son Moody Mulkey and Denise as well as a daughter-in-law, Dawna Mulkey. He leaves behind grandchildren, Blair Gibson and wife Melanie of Sweetwater, TX; Kari Sowders and husband Dustin of Hewitt, TX; Curtis Gibson and wife Megan of Amarillo, TX; Clifton Mulkey and wife Lauren of Magnolia, TX as well as Maeson, Hayden, Laurel and Laney Mulkey and Abby, Libby, and Brinkley Odneal. Rex is also survived by eight great-grandchildren, Brody and Mallory Gibson; Karter and Kason Sowders; Genevieve and Nixon Gibson and Avery and Annsley Mulkey.
