Memorial services for Jerry McGinnis, 75, of Amarillo, will be 11:00 am Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at Cox Funeral Home Benton Chapel with Rev. Ken Cole officiating. Arrangements are by Cox Funeral Home.
Jerry was born October 3, 1939 to Harold and Thelma McGinnis. He passed away Thursday, December 4, 2014 after a short illness. He lived in Amarillo all his life, except for two years, when the family moved to Missouri. He graduated from Amarillo High School in 1958, where he played football for Joe Kerbel. He married the love of his life, June Wrather, in 1959. They had 2 sons and after the death of their oldest son, Mike, in 1998, they raised their granddaughter, Shea, as their daughter. His greatest enjoyment came from his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and he enjoyed every minute he spent with them.
Jerry coached baseball and football for over 20 years and produced several city championship teams. He was a role model for many young boys and well respected by the players and parents. He was a truck driver for many years, owned Quality Movers and retired from the State of Texas. After retirement, he and his wife ran several duplicate bridge games for the ACBL Duplicate Bridge of Amarillo. He served on their local board and was also their head director. He was a member of Saint Stephen United Methodist Church. Those that knew him knew of his love and faith in Christ and that he was looking forward to being reunited with his loved ones. He is preceded in death by his son, Mike.
He is survived by his wife, June, son, Mark McGinnis and his wife Chris of Wisconsin, a brother, Dale McGinnis and his wife Denise of Amarillo, his grandchildren, Shea Blackwell of Amarillo, Wrather McGinnis of San Angelo, Matthew, Makayla, and Makinna McGinnis all of Wisconsin, and 3 great grandchildren, Kylan, Kasyn, and Kapreese Blackwell all of Amarillo.
