Jesse Bumpus

Burl was born on July 11, 1943 in Memphis, TX to Archie and Linnie Bumpus. He graduated from Estelline High School in 1961 before attending Hardin Simmons University where he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1966. He was then commissioned into the United States Army on January 7, 1967 as a 2nd Lieutenant. He served as a military criminologist while stationed in Korea. He was honorably discharged on May 29, 1972. Burl married Glenda Neel Davis on May 28, 1971 in Childress. She preceded him in death in 2005. Burl was a devoted Christian man, serving as pastor at Carey Baptist Church in Carey, as music minister at Crutchfield Heights Baptist Church in Sherman, and finally, as church pianist at Bell Avenue Baptist Church in Amarillo. Throughout his life, he touched so many people. He was a loving husband, father, and "Papa" to his family. He is survived by his 2 daughters, Kathy Montgomery and husband Jimmy of Abilene, and Michelle "Shelly" Loter and husband Keith of Childress; 10 grandchildren, Kara, Matthew and Olivia Montgomery, Jordan James, Jacklyn Marin, Madison and Aaron James, Rachel Hadfield and Kat and Tabbi Loter. He was preceded in death by his Parents, Arch and Linnie Bumpus, and wife, Glenda Bumpus.
