Jim was born in Lubbock, Texas, on January of 1950. In '51 the family moved to Plainview, Texas where he graduated from Plainview High School in '68. In 1972, Jim married Barbara Burch and in '73 he went to work for Southwestern Public Service Company. Jim was transferred with SPS to Amarillo in October 1980 and retired in May of 2008. Jim was a car guy belonging to several groups, some of which were National Street Rod Association, Goodguys Organization, and at the time of his death he was vice-president of the local Amarillo Top of Texas Chevy Club. Jim wishes each person wear blue jeans and any car shirt. Please drive your old car if you wish. He is preceded in death by his parents E.C. and Zelma Caviness.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Barbara; a daughter, Paula and husband Joshua of Amarillo; a son, Don of Amarillo; and daughter Jean of Amarillo. Brother E.C. "Ed" Caviness and wife Hiroko.
