Jimmy B. West, 81, of Amarillo died Tuesday, July 18, 2017. Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 22, 2017 at Coulter Road Baptist Church with Pastor Aaron Summer and Pastor Jim Benton officiating. The family will have private burial at a later date. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, July 21, 2017 at Cox Funeral Home. Jimmy was born September 5, 1935 in Memphis, TX to Howard Olen and Willie Belle Scott West. He was raised in Memphis, graduating from Memphis High School in 1954. He then attended West Texas State University where he earned his BA in English and Speech, an MA in Education, MA in School Administration and MS in Library Science. He taught for 34 years in Fritch, Sunray, Dumas, Childress, Andrews and River Road in Amarillo. Jimmy married Barbara Waybourn in Childress 27th December 1972. They were married for over 44 years. They retired in 1993 and became care givers to family. Together, they traveled to many parts of the US and Canada. The last 13 years were devoted to a great-great niece Emeline Fulton in her formative years. Jimmy was active in Amarillo Genealogical Society, Amarillo Parkinson's Society, and Joy Singers of Coulter Road Baptist Church. He honorably served in the US Army 1954-1957. In the spring of 2017 he received his pin and certificate for being a member the Dumas Lodge #1009 A.F. & A.M of Mason's for 50 years. Jimmy accepted Jesus as his savior at a young age and continued to grow as a Christian for the rest of his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Bobby and Billy, and niece Tippi. He is survived by his wife Barbara, nieces Margo Boyd and Traci West, great-nieces Robyne Jones and Kelley Parker and great-great nieces Brenlei and Brylin Parker; extended family members Emeline and Alysia Fulton, Toni and Dennis Ratliff, Scott, Jenny and Cooper Fulton, Floyd, Denise and Eric Key, Kristen and John Roberts, Melody Swauger, D'Ann and Jimmy Moutos, De-Vonna Clark and Jean Abercrombie. The family suggest memorials be sent to East Mound Cemetery Association, Matador, TX 79244 or Jo Bidwell, American Parkinson's Disease Association, 3610-22nd St. Suite 300 Lubbock, TX 79410 or favorite charity.
