Jo Marr Simmons Baird, 80, died Monday, May 19, 2014.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Comanche Trail Church of Christ with Loran Harper officiating. Burial will follow at 4 p.m. in Amherst Cemetery. Arrangements are by Cox Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive.
Jo was born Aug. 28, 1933, in Amherst to James Roberts Simmons and Sarah Isadora Whatley Simmons. She married Ross Emanuel Morgan Jr. on June 25, 1954, in Clovis, N.M. He preceded her in death on Dec. 10, 1969, in Wheeler from Hodgkin's disease.
Jo married John Lawrence Baird on Dec. 11, 1972, in Roswell, N.M. When they married, they combined Lawrence's family of five and Jo's family of four into one big family of nine. She devoted her life to being a wife and a mother.
Jo was gifted in teaching and taught the teen girl's class at church for many years. She also helped teach vacation Bible school in Las Vegas, N.M., for 18 years. She flew all over the United States speaking for women's events, ladies days and women's retreats.
Jo loved traveling with her husband Lawrence, vacationing with her family and being a grandmother to the precious grandchildren that she loved. Jo greatly loved her God, her faith, her family and her friends. She was a woman who was full of wit and wisdom.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ross Morgan; and six brothers and sisters.
Survivors include her husband, Lawrence Baird of Amarillo; seven children, Melinda Morgan Cahill and husband Mark of Jal, N.M., Monalea Micham and husband Daryl of Jal, Cindy Thompson and husband Tommy of Amarillo, Stephanie Ivey and Gary of Amarillo, Trey Morgan and wife Lea of Childress, Melinda Milburn and husband Billy of Amarillo and Bruce Baird and wife Amanda of Tulia; a brother, Hartley Simmons and wife Vadis of Emory; 25 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
