Joe was born August 6, 1942, in San Antonio. He retired from the navy as a Chief Petty Officer and was a Vietnam veteran. During his career, he served aboard the USS Midway and USS Oriskany, when both ships caught fire and sustained heavy damage. He was very proud of his service to his country. On July 17, 1982, he married Janice Rulon in California. After retiring, he and Janice loved to travel in their RV, seeing almost all fifty states. He had a great personality and liked to ride dune buggies, camping, racing cars and moto cross. He was an extremely gifted and talented wood carver. He was a member of the Thunder Bird Club, the Jeep Club and Southwest Church of Christ. His caring terrier, named Zeke, was what he considered to be the "wonder dog". Later in life, he enjoyed spending time with friends, known as the "Mall Gang", where they would have coffee and walk. To his friends, he was affectionately known as Joe "The Accessories" Grooms. He is preceded in death by his mother, Lucy Bea Barker, a son, Rodney Grooms, a sister, Martha Faye and a brother, Elvin Grooms.
He is survived by his loving wife, Janice Grooms; his children, Kevin Grooms and wife Kristi, and Raquel Roberson and husband Troy; three grandchildren, Kevin Grooms II, Katelyn Grooms, and Garrett Roberson; a great grandchild, Tinsley Grooms; his siblings, Belvin Grooms, Lorene Batchelder and husband Spencer, Linda Horsbough and husband Scott, and Shirley Duncan.
