John Hiram Corbett

John Hiram “John John” Corbett, 87, passed into his Father's heavenly 6700 on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2018. Funeral Services will be 2:00 pm on Tuesday, First Baptist Church Sanctuary with Rev. Corky Holland officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 pm Monday at Cox Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive. John was born in Los Angeles, California August 25, 1931 but was raised in Tucson, Arizona. He proudly served his country with four years in the Navy as a Korean War Veteran and four years in the Air Force where he received his training to enter civil service with the Federal Aviation Administration. He worked in airport towers in Guam and Okinawa, Tucson and Oklahoma City, and EI Paso, Texas where he retired in 1994 after 34 years of service. He then began volunteer work at Vista Del Sol Medical Center, amassing over 6,000 hours of service the next 17 years. He and Lawanda relocated to Amarillo in 2011 to be nearer family. John loved all things Amarillo-his home, his street, the city and his adopted family. He was preceded in death by his parents, James & Josephine Corbett, one brother, James Corbett, one nephew William Corbett, and one brother-in-law Larry Miller and his beloved pups, Ellie and Sophie. He is survived by the love of his life, wife Lawanda; one daughter Denise Corbett of Central Point, Oregon; two grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and three nieces, Nancye, Jamie, and Paula.
