John Lopez Solis, 67, of Amarillo died Saturday, March 15, 2014.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Southwest Church of Christ with Bryan Mashburn and Marcelino Banda officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery East. Arrangements are by Cox Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive.
Mr. Solis was born Aug. 15, 1946, in Palacios to John and Francis Solis. He was a graduate of Port Lavaca High School. He was an Army veteran, where he served in Vietnam. It was there that he received the Bronze Star, as well as the Purple Heart. He was an active member of the V.F.W. in Rio Grand City.
Mr. Solis married Helen Diaz on Nov. 3, 1967, in Port Lavaca. Mr. Solis started at Sunset School of Preaching in 1979. As part of his schooling, he served as a preacher in Hart in 1980. He was a graduate of the Sunset School of Preaching in Lubbock in 1981. He preached in many churches until 1995. He worked for the Texas Dept. of Criminal Justice in Dalhart for 15 years where he retired as a lieutenant in 2005. John loved his Lord and his family with all of his heart. He was a member of Southwest Church of Christ. He was happiest when his family was all together. Most of all, he loved being "Popo" to his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Susie Chavana in 2013.
Survivors include his wife, Helen of Amarillo; a daughter, Frances Solis Concha and husband Joe of Dumas; three sons, Juan Solis IV and wife Veronica of Dalhart, Henry Solis of Yukon, Okla., and Julian Solis of Amarillo; a sister, Mary Ann Thomas of Victoria; six grandchildren, Mark Anthony, David Allen, Andrew Alexander, Abigail Analise, John Justus V, and Shelly Allison.
