Joyce Ann Cameron, 61, of Amarillo, died Tuesday, September 24, at her home. She was born in Slaton, TX on July 9, 1958, to BJ Campbell and Charles Schneider. She graduated from Amarillo High School in 1976. Joyce married the love of her life, Don Cameron, on July 28, 1978.
Joyce made everyone feel like she was their best friend. She always made everyone feel special; she welcomed everyone into her home. Some enjoyed her hospitality so much, they would often forgo the conveniences of a hotel and stay at her house instead. She loved any excuse for a party, and they were always exquisitely thrown, down to the last detail. Joyce enjoyed being crafty, and was known to plan entire girls trips around a craft she wanted to do with her friends. One of the most memorable crafty endeavors she took on in the last 10 years was quilting. She made countless quilts for her friends, children of friends, grandchildren of friends, and her family, but no one received more quilts, blankets, and pillowcases than her grandsons. Each project was especially made for each person, and she put so much love into each and every one. Joyce was a giver. She loved finding just the right gift for someone, or buying small gifts “just in case.” There’s an entire closet full of said gifts just to prove that fact.
She loved nothing more than getting together with her friends. She loved to meticulously plan every last detail for a girls trip-down to where you would stay, how you would get there, who would drive (always her!), what activities you would do, what places to go, what time you would have to be somewhere, what face mask you would do, and don’t even think about arguing with her about any of it. She was a member of multiple Bunco groups, where it was more about visiting with friends and drinking wine, than it was about actually playing Bunco. She was an avid reader, and loved discussing the monthly book with her book club. Joyce enjoyed exercising, whether out on an evening walk with Don, or making someone go to the gym with her, despite the fact that neither of them actually wanted to go.
Joyce was a member of the Samaritans class at Hillside for many years, as well as numerous Bible studies. The leaders could always rely on Joyce for a thoughtful, insightful, Holy Spirit-filled answer. She passed this love of the Lord onto both of her children and all 4 of her grandchildren. You couldn’t help but see the love of God shine through her.
Joyce loved to travel. One of her favorite places to go was to her and Don’s mountain retreat in Angel Fire. Whether on a girls trip, family trip, relaxing trip, work on the cabin trip, “cut down a Christmas tree at Thanksgiving” trip, or a “watching everyone ski but her” trip, she always enjoyed her time spent there. She went on two incredibly memorable, once-in-a-lifetime vacations to Tahiti and Israel this year. Both of which she said the pictures couldn’t do the beauty of either place justice. Her family was lucky enough to take a lot of one-on-one trips with her over the course of the last year or so. She and Don went to Disney World, just the two of them. She and Mark went to Denver to see her favorite band, The Eagles. She and Lindsay went on a 4 day road trip to shop throughout Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri.
Joyce’s pride and joy were her four grandsons. She always made each little boy feel like *they* were her favorite. Grana, as her grandsons affectionately call her, could always be counted on for a game of tag, football, basketball, or anything else the four boys could come up with for her to play with them. She attended countless soccer, baseball, flag football, and basketball games as well as golf tournaments over the years, and was always there with a hug, win or lose. She rarely missed a game, especially those that took place in her own front yard.
Joyce is survived by her husband Don, son Mark, his wife Layne, and their sons Clay and Cole; her daughter Lindsay, her husband Jeremy, and their boys Seth and Eli. Other family survivors include her mother, BJ Campbell, and her sister, Paula Ritchey. She was predeceased by her beloved grandmother, Pauline Green, her father Charles Schneider, and her sister, Tancy Schneider.
The memorial service will be held at Hillside Christian Church West Campus on Saturday, September 28, at 2 pm. The family will be receiving visitors at their home on Friday evening from 6-8 pm. Arrangements are being made by Cox-Rowley Funeral Home. Burial services will be held at Llano Cemetery.
