Kent was born on August 3, 1943 in Amarillo to Holly and Evelyn Guthrie. He was raised in Spearman, where he graduated from Spearman High School in 1961. On August 31, 1962 he married the love of his life at First United Methodist Church. After graduating from North Texas in 1965 with a Bachelor's Degree in Business, Kent and Glenda moved back to their hometown of Spearman, where they raised their children, Mark and Carrie Ann. Kent always supported his children and was there for them in everything they did. He was a farmer and rancher, as well as owning Spearman Super Service, which he operated for over 30 years. Upon retirement from this business, Kent worked as a commodities broker, retiring in 2005.
Kent served as president of the Chamber of Commerce, served on the Spearman school board, was a Hansford County Commissioner and was an active member of Spearman United Methodist Church, where he faithfully served in the choir. Above all, Kent was known for his kind heart and his generosity and compassion. He was a beloved "Papa" to his grandchildren.
After retirement, Kent and Glenda moved to Amarillo, TX to enjoy golf, traveling and making new friends. They joined Polk Street United Methodist Church and Aldersgate Sunday School Class.
He is survived by his wife, Glenda Guthrie of Amarillo; son, Mark Guthrie and wife Carrie of Canyon; daughter, Carrie Ann Powell and husband Eric of Highland Village; 4 grandchildren, Mary Grace Guthrie, Chloe Rose Guthrie, Emilee Gene Powell and Maxwell Eric Powell; brother-in-laws, Larry Butts and wife Robbie of Lubbock and Terry Butt and wife Patty of Spearman and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lawton Guthrie; grandson, Gatlin Guthrie and mother-in-law, Rosalie Butt.
