Lanell Hagemeier

LaNell was born on November 19, 1926 in Amarillo, Texas to Johnnie and Opal Ekelund. She graduated from Amarillo High School in 1944, where she was a cheerleader, an honorary ROTC Lieutenant and a Dixie Dice dancer. LaNell received her Bachelor of Science degree from WTSU in Arts and Education. While at WTSU she was a War Bond Queen, Sun Bowl Queen, Cheerleader, Sweater Girl and Most Beautiful. She was a dancer and performer for the troops and Camp Bowie, Shepard Field, and Amarillo Air Force Base. On June 3, 1947, she married Harold Hagemeier in Amarillo. They were married for 69 years and had 3 children. . LaNell got her masters from WT in 1969. LaNell taught art in Amarillo ISD and Canyon ISD for approximately 25 years. After her retirement Harold and LaNell became highly involved in the Texas Barbed Wire Association. Harold wrote barbed wire identification books and LaNell drew illustrations of the barbed wire for the books. She and Harold received many awards for their work. She is survived by her husband, Harold Hagemeier; daughter, Lynn Lee and husband Leslie Lee; son, Alan Hagemeier and wife Ann Hagemeier; 5 Grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren and one on the way; sister, GuyDell McCabe and brother, John Ed Ekelund and wife Marianna Ekelund. She was preceded in death by his son, John Herbert Hagemeier; father, Johnnie Ekelund; mother, Opal Ekelund and great granddaughter, Shelby Rae Sandefer. The family wishes to thank the Hospice of the Southwest for the care and love given to LaNell and the family during LaNell's final days.
