Laverne Juanice Rucker Hood

Laverne went home to be with the Lord on March 30, 2016. Laverne was surrounded by members of her loving family. Laverne was born to Grover Emmett and Alice Elizabeth (Sharp) Rucker on February 5, 1921 in Beggs, Oklahoma, raised in east Texas, and lived in Amarillo for over 60 years. Laverne graduated from Grand Saline High School in 1937 and Ouachita Baptist University in 1942. Laverne loved science and taught school before joining the Navy in 1943. She was stationed at Great Lakes Naval Air Station during World War II and it was there that she met the love of her life, Kenneth. They were married in 1944 until the time of Kenneth's death in June of 2000. Laverne was a devout Christian and taught Sunday school for many years and was long time member of South Lawn Baptist Church, Second Baptist Church, and recently First Baptist Church. She volunteered in elementary schools as a HOSTS mentor and counseled women in need through the Christian Women's Job Corps into her late 80's. Laverne was totally devoted to her husband and family and enjoyed every opportunity to spend time with children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, especially family reunions near Pagosa Springs, Colorado. Laverne was an accomplished quilter and enjoyed making quilts for family and friends. Laverne's faith was the basis of her love and generosity to all. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be deeply missed. Laverne is survived by her son, Jack Hood and wife Kathleen; 2 daughters, Sheryl O'Dell and husband Bill and Kenda Foran and husband Tom; sister, Emma Jean Davis; brothers, Harold and Manord Rucker, her beloved grandchildren, David, Matt and wife Sheila, Josh O'Dell and wife Alex, Keely Farkas and husband David, Jourdan Foran, Jack O'Dell, Katie Unger and husband Mike, Ali Foran, Andy O'Dell; her 7 great grandchildren and her sister-in-law, Berdine Naslund. Laverne was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Kenneth; her beloved daughter-in-law, Brenda Kate Blackburn Hood; a grandson, Benjamin Hood; her parents; and her brothers, Maurice, Jack and Jerry.
